With a New Afterword by the Author
Slaughterhouse is the first book of its kind to explore the impact that unprecedented changes in the meatpacking industry over the last twenty-five yearsparticularly industry consolidation, increased line speeds, and deregulationhave had on workers, animals, and consumers. It is also the first time ever that workers have spoken publicly about whats really taking place behind the closed doors of Americas slaughterhouses.
In this new paperback edition, author Gail A. Eisnitz brings the story up to date since the books original publication. She describes the ongoing efforts by the Humane Farming Association to improve conditions in the meatpacking industry, media exposs that have prompted reforms resulting in multimillion dollar appropriations by Congress to try to enforce federal inspection laws, and a favorable decision by the Supreme Court to block construction of what was slated to be one of the largest hog factory farms in the country. Nonetheless, Eisnitz makes it clear that abuses continue and much work still needs to be done.

this book made me cry. read it, if you have the courage. youll never see farm animals in the same way or eat meat without thinking of the hell these poor creatures endure.

I had this book for about six months before I got up the nerve to read it. I have always been a meat-eater and was afraid that if I read the book I would have to give it up. Ive read the book and havent touched meat since. In my case ignorance wasnt bliss. Ignorance was just plain stupidity.
Ive been around animals of all types all of my life and after reading this book I know I can never eat another piece of meat knowing that an animal suffered just so I could selfishly have a steak.
Even if you dont read this because youre an animal lover, read it because you love yourself and your family enough not to feed them the filth and disease that comes out of the meat factories. If you can look past the sad eyes of the cow that is being skinned alive, then if nothing else just stop a moment to think about the things that have come into contact with the meat youre eating. This book describes the filth and disease that make it all the way to that meat on your plate. Im a Registered Dietitian and I had learned to trust the USDA. If there was a USDA certification on my meat label I was safe. My "trusted" USDA now recommends that I cook the meat that I buy to a safe temperature to kill everything that they missed. Why else do you think you cant buy a rare hamburger anymore? Its because its dirty and diseased and it has to be practically burnt to remove risk of that filth/disease from the factors being passed on to the consumer.
Please have the courage to read this book.
every person should know what they are eating!!!

This book was written over ten years ago, population then, and meat consumption was not as high as it is today. Imagine how the profiteers behind the meat market have to rush these animals through the massacre to provide for the needs of a ever hungrier and misinformed population we have now.
This book was the last drop into a series of books that made me give up eating meat entirely. No wonder they never allowed it on that 60 minutes show, but after all these years the truth is coming out, slowly but surely.
All that is told by Gail is something that will mark you. Read it, learn it, change your ways.
