We hear constant diatribes against "terrorists" especially since after 9/11 (though some of that rhetoric started a long time ago.) But doesnt such a thing have a context? Also, should we not be asking WHY the terrorists do what they do? Thats something of which Dubya isnt capable--any more than he is of running a state or country.

Dr. Chomsky does just that. He starts with admitting the severity of 9/11. Surely there are some Chomsky critics wholl say that he defends those responsible for 9/11. Nonsense. His underlying premise is that the event was perhaps the worst instant crime outside of war EVER. (He stresses later the word "instant." There are countless other examples of longer term and more devestating terrorist actions. The only example on which he elaborates is the US campaign that destroyed Nicaragua, perhaps beyond repair.)

He attempts to define terrorism, that is something done against US, whoever "US" may be. His example of that "logic" is among the worst mass murderers in history, the Nazis. They werent terrorists. They were defending their charge from the terrorism of the partisans.

A portion of his presentation that borders on humorous is that, even after a prima facie case that bin Laden was responsible for 9/11, all they had was a prima facie case. He declares that they could probably have done better without intelligence agencies! Whats more, what these agencies were looking for should have ben easy to find. After all, the CIA trained bin Laden and various other killers during the Soviets Afghanistan campain!

Its almost hard not to go on here as this is such a valuable analysis. But Ill finish with Chomskys important act, of asking why 9/11 and similar acts occur. Conventional wisdom--even that proclaimed confidently by ostensibly left-leaning columnists, is that Al Quaeda and similar groups resent us because were just the height of liberty, democracy...you know, the type of stuff youd find in grade school American history texts. But the facts show particularly that there are US troops right by Islams holiest grounds. That encouraged me to consider how the US would have reacted if Soviet troops had encamped in, say, the Vatican, or Canterbury.

This is an important presentation to get people to think beyond the "norm" which is hopelessly shallow and encourages more jingoist flag waving--and hatred from the rest of the world.

Very competent academic comunicator... but certainly only looking at these complex problems from one perspective, far left, and any honest comunicator, never mind educator should at least try to gain understanding from more than one perspective.
A must-buy for the thinking person

I would strongly recommend getting all of Chomskys lectures on CD from AK press. Ill be the first to admit that theres a lot of simplistic rhetoric and general idiocy on the American Left (such as it is) but Chomsky is the antidode for that. You cannot seriously discuss American history, politics, or foreign affairs without coming to terms with Chomsky. The man is the modern Socrates the soft-spoken gadfly that the State has tried to silence.

TNWoT is a discussion about the nature and uses of "terrorism" both State-sponsored and otherwise. Really, pick up a used copy and listen to it with a ctitical and open mind. It may be the best $8.00 you ever spend.

Against all odds and in this time of Neocons controlling every channel of news, Dr. Chomsky puts things in perspective the way they really are. Of course this is not for the average Fox viewer whose understanding of the world is limited to how the current U.S. administration wants people to think, so if you have no problems with the Neocons, youd have a hard time believing the content. It does require the reader/listener to be objective and familiar with the foreign policies of the U.S. government in the past 50 years. Thank you Dr. Chomsky.

Once more from the top

Typical "we have to understand why they hate us so we can stop doing whatever it is they dont like so they will love us" garbage. This is just an excuse to bash the President and the US. Complete waste of time and money.
